About
The thyroid gland is located in the lower neck, right next to the trachea (windpipe) consisting of a left and right lobe. Nodules in the thyroid gland are quite common. Fortunately, the majority of these are due to benign conditions. A small minority may be due to thyroid cancer—so appropriate work up of a thyroid nodule is important.
The parathyroid glands regulate calcium metabolism in the body. There are typically four parathyroid glands in the body, two on each side. A benign tumor of the parathyroid gland, called a parathyroid adenoma, can cause the calcium levels in your body to become elevated. Highly elevated calcium levels can be dangerous to your heart.
